Meet Cleveland’s first media star, Winsor French! In the still-roaring 1930s, this openly gay newspaper columnist for The Cleveland Press told us what to eat (pigs feet and beans at a jazz joint on Cedar) and what to drink (champagne cocktails at the Ritz Hotel in Paris). The outrageous Winsor published the price of illegal booze and gave readers his best hangover cures. And before Anything Goes opened on Broadway, Cole Porter played the musical’s score for him in a speakeasy on Carnegie Ave. Winsor led a glamorous—and surprisingly touching—life. We’ll relive it in a witty, elegant evening at Nighttown spiced with great Porter songs including “Night and Day” and “Just One of Those Things.”
