Need a little Christmas? Let TMTP put you in the holiday spirit. Our artists Bill Rudman, Nancy Maier, Joe Monaghan and Sandra Simon are certainly ready to haul out the holly.
Q: What makes TMTP’s Christmas Cabaret so special?
NANCY: I don’t think there’s anywhere else you could see a program that pays tribute to all the great American songwriters of the 20th century who included a Christmas song or two in their catalog. And there are some surprising people on that list!
BILL: Most Christmas shows are big, and that can be thrilling. Ours is small, but I think just as effective. The audience gets the chance to hear these songs they’ve known for years performed up close and personal, and that can make quite a difference.
SANDRA: I agree. People leave our show having reconnected with their unique holiday stories.
Q: Why has the show become a holiday tradition?
SANDRA: It has taken the place of my childhood visits to downtown Higbees — eating lunch at the Silver Grill and visiting with Santa.
NANCY: It has become a yearly and inclusive expression of love during the holiday season, regardless of religious affiliation.
JOE: I’m excited to make my Christmas Cabaret debut and have a new holiday tradition in my family.
Q: Do you have a fond memory or funny story about performing in a previous year in our Christmas Cabaret you can share?
BILL: Yes, I do! One year at Stocker we came to the end of a song and I left the stage; I thought it was the end of the first act, but it wasn’t! The cast and audience sure gave me a hard time about that as I returned sheepishly to my stool.
NANCY: Years ago at an early Nighttown performance, one of our singers came down with the flu so with just a few hours notice, I had to take over most of her songs and duets from the piano. The audience went along and truly supported us. What started out as a scary experience turned out to be wonderfully gratifying.
SANDRA: I remember one year I was struggling with some vocal issues during the show. I simply turned to Nancy before a few of my vocally demanding songs, and without skipping a beat, she sang them for me. That’s the top-notch teamwork we have built together.
Q: What kind of winter wonderland can audiences expect at Stocker and Nighttown?
BILL: I can’t imagine a cozier space than Stocker. The lighting is so beautiful. And it’s always great seeing so many familiar faces. This our 10th year at Stocker, and the Christmas audience just keeps coming back time after time.
NANCY: I agree, Stocker is the perfect intimate space to perform in. Then Nighttown really captures the cabaret experience.
BILL: It’s a blast! The show/dinner/drinks combo feels so festive.
JOE: I’m looking forward to both places. This cabaret is just a wonderful way to enrich the holiday season — by taking a break from the craziness that we all live through in the month of December and enjoying an evening of classic song.
