Irving Berlin: The American Dream in Song
Praised by reviewers as “A lavish feast of music” and “Great songs performed by an irresistible company,” this multimedia concert celebrates the creative genius of America’s most prolific and best-loved songwriter, Irving Berlin.
In 30 great tunes – from “White Christmas” and “God Bless America” to “How Deep Is the Ocean?,” “Always” and “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” – Irving Berlin: The American Dream in Song tells the inspiring story of the life, work and abiding legacy of an American icon.
The son of painfully poor immigrants, Berlin helped keep his family afloat as a singing waiter in turn-of-the-century New York City. Self-taught on the piano, he eventually turned to songwriting, both to earn a more substantial income and as a way to express his deepest feelings for his adopted country. In the process, he captured what Walter Cronkite called “the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives.”
Bill Rudman hosts – with terrific performances by singers Erin Kufel and Vince Mastro, and featuring pianist Joe Hunter and his trio.
